Introduction
The World Cup is the premier international circuit for biathlon. Nine separate events, each with two or three races, are held from December through March. As many as 200 athletes representing forty national teams compete.
For the coming season, the World Cup will commence in December in Sweden, Austria, and Slovakia. After this early period, the athletes will have a holiday period off.
The World Cup will begin in the New Year with events in Germany and northern Italy. The athletes will then have two weeks off to prepare for the Winter Olympic Games that begin in February. Though the Games are officially hosted by Torino, the biathlon events will be held in Cesana/San Sicario, a venue in the mountains west of Torino.
Following the Olympic Games, the World Cup will conclude with three more events in Slovenia, Finland, and Norway.
