Near perfection
September 24, 2004
from Heber City, Utah

This morning was just like any other. I awoke, had my breakfast, and started thinking about the day’s workout. A lactate threshold workout was on the plan. My thoughts were on the technique issues that my coach James Upham and I worked on while he was here in Utah a few days ago. The camp has gone extremely well. I am improving.

Progressing in a sport, or in anything else in life, comes in waves and steps. I remember learning Norwegian and how one day, a month into my life there, I woke up and started thinking på norsk. It was an odd feeling. Suddenly, everything just clicked, and I understood what people were saying, seemingly overnight.

In my workout today, I made a similar step. Everything clicked. Most of the targets went down. I shot consistently better than my shooting time goals. My technique felt improved, exemplified by the fact that I was skiing faster with a lower heart rate and blood lactate value.

It was amazing, especially considering the fact that my workout today was one of the hardest I have attempted ever. Add in the altitude, and it becomes the hardest I have done. But during the workout, I felt wonderful. Things were just moving as they should.

It is a great feeling to have seven weeks away from my first race. Certainly one of the major keys to the success of the past two weeks has been my consistent use of my Arkray Lactate Pro. It has given me confidence in my training because I can see with every test that I take, how my body is reacting to training. This is especially important at altitude since recovery takes a bit longer. If I had relied on just my heart rate, then I very much doubt that today's workout would have been as successful as it was. I would have slept in.

Peace,
