Jotunheimen, “the home of the giants,” is a giant expanse of tree-less mountains just northwest of Beitostølen. It was believed that the Norse giant gods gathered in this place to wreak havoc on mankind. To me, it looks like a golf course fit for giants, with large boulders strewn everywhere like golf balls. There are small ice covered ponds scattered like sand pits, too.
We did not see any giants; perhaps they were waiting out the gale force winds. We did conclude that it would be the perfect location to prepare for an expedition across Antarctica.
Today, it was not such a great place to prepare for a biathlon season. I attempted to dodge hundreds of Norwegian skiers while doing race pace intervals around the loop. Norwegians on their first ski tour can be sort of like cats woozy from too much catnip. They are everywhere. Some fall in your way, some stand in your way. Some make you go in circles around them to get on your way.
The trail was not groomed today and was covered by the snow that is blown unimpeded by trees across the high terrain. It was a difficult workout just to get through.
At least I am skiing.
Peace,
